SCOUT SHORTS
by Joe Koshut ![]() Our two scouting units are having a very busy and active summer.
Cub Scout Pack 330 participated in the district Scout-A-Rama, attended Day Camp at ERAU, hiked around Lynx Lake, and had fishing fun at Goldwater Lake. This month a big family picnic will be held at the Willow Creek Ramada and a family camp-out is being organized at the Granite Basin Group Camp for September. Boy Scout 330 participated in the district Scout—A—Rama, conducted the Historical American Flag Program during the Flag Day weekend at the Veterans Hospital and the Adult Center in P.V. The troop also had the winning entry in our Elks Lodge Chili Cook—Off. I asked Scoutmaster Mike Woods how the scout troop did it!?! He said it took 29 hours of food preparation, cooking, simmering, and final cooking with the last dump of seasoning. (He would not give out the secret recipe.) By the time of this reading the troop will have completed their summer encampment at the Council’s Camp Geronimo near Payson. (Hopefully I will survive a day with them at camp.) The recycling program for aluminum cans continues each month, and regular troop meetings will resume on Thursday, September 2nd at our lodge. We want to thank all the adult leaders that help make the above happen in the lives of our Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. We salute you! |

SCOUT SHORTS
by Joe Koshut ![]() Our Elks Lodge
330 has chartered and sponsored two scouting units for over 30 years,
touching the lives of hundreds of boys.
Boy Scout Troop
330 is currently led by Elks Brother Mike Woods as Scoutmaster. The
troop program is designed to teach youth: patriotism, courage,
self-reliance and kindred virtues. Emphasis is placed on the Scout Oath
and Law for character development, citizenship training, and mental and
physical fitness. Many activities include the great outdoors.
Cub Scout Pack
330 is led by Dr. Rick Azpfe as Cubmaster. The Cubbing program largely
centers around the home and family, where parents and guardians assist
the Cubs with projects and activities. Each week there are neighborhood
den meetings with adult Den Leaders. Then, once a month, all the Dens,
Cubs and parents gather for a big Pack meeting which is filled with fun
and recognition with awards and rank advancements.

Last month I made note of a
special
Eagle Scout dinner that was
coming
up in November. This will
be at
seven o’clock November
20th. All the
officers of the lodge have
been sent
special announcements on
this dinner
but all lodge members are encouraged to attend. These will be the first Eagle Scouts this lodge has had in over four years and this time we will have two. Come and show your support for the scouts and their families. Our keynote speaker will be
writer
and author Colonel Cooper who has written articles for several magazines and published his own book: Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, Guns and Ammo. Colonel Cooper has the Gun- Site Training Range north of Paulden where Navy Seals, law enforcement officers, and military special forces are trained. The site is also available for self defense training. By November 3rd we would
like for
all lodge members to R.S.V.P. Curt Fruechte at the lodge or myself (717- 1363) if you plan to attend. BBQ sirloin steak and chicken breast with all the trimmings will be served. We need a total count. COME AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT |

October was a very busy month for
the troop. Starting things off was a demonstration day at Wal-Mart. The troop had a table set up with a fire prevention demonstration and helpful hints on how to use a home fire extinguisher properly. The troop competed at the district Camporee – an overnighter in the Bradshaws (Bradshaw Mountains) and took home fourteen different awards! The Scouts did a wonderful job of showing Scout spirit and the skills that they have acquired as outdoorsmen. We had our annual popcorn fundraiser during the month, which keeps the kitty full for future endeavors and helps us subsidize current projects. Please keep the aluminum cans coming. We rely on this income to keep us going throughout the year and it is critical to our cash flow. Toss the bags either into the two trashcans to the right of the Bingo entrance or just toss them over the fence into the Boy Scout compound – it all goes to the same place. Mike and Elaine Woods (Scoutmaster and wife) received Leave No Trace training and will be helping the boys earn their LNT award as well as assisting the US Forestry Department to help train their interns. Leave No Trace is a national program which focuses on low impact camping, and is designed to make each boy in the troop an excellent outdoorsman. The troop participated in a highway cleanup campaign and cleaned up it’s one mile section of Hwy 69. More news to follow… |
| Several of the scouts
worked as food servers at the Charity Ball and did an excellent job.
The only problem they encountered was that the ice cream was frozen so
hard they were unable to get it out of the container. This delayed
dessert 10 or 15 minutes. The scouts had nothing to do with this.
Scouts are better prepared! The troop held a Court Of Honor meeting on May 9th at Fain Park. At this meeting I was presented, on behalf of our Elks Lodge, a charter granted to us by the Boy Scouts Of America for serving Boy Scout Troop #330 for 29 years. Something we should all be proud of. Can you image one ton of aluminum? The troop collected over 2000 lbs. of aluminum this last month. With summer coming it should even get better, everybody drink up! The scouts participated in the Scout-O-Rama “Saluting The American Heroes“. This was May 17th and 18th at the Mile High Middle School. I hope you had a chance to attend and see what they can do. |
| This past month
several of the scouts took advantage of our nice weather and took
hiking trips. The ambitious ones hiked down into the Grand Canyon and
another group hiked into the Superstition Mountains. No casualties were
reported. The Scout troop will now be part of our Elks Web Page. Brent McIntyre is the troops Web Master and will be working with Rock Anderson to keep all parties informed. Several of the scouts have participated in special classes from first aid, CPR and food handling. If any members of the lodge would like to participate in any of these activities Jet me know. Some of these classes will be conducted on weekends. They are now gearing up for the Elks Charity Ball. The contract agreement between the lodge and the scouts has been signed. NOTE: Receptacles for aluminum cans have been placed at the rear of the building just past the door into the Bingo hall. Please use them. |

Twelve of the scouts went to the
“Klondike” in the Williams Mountains. They encountered
temperatures of minus six degrees. Sleeping in tents they
feasted on biscuits and gravy made with Elk
meat; “We just made another sacrifice.” They also had their traditional deep-fried turkey for dinner. Reservations are being taken for next year — -6 degrees? Nine of the scouts participated in the YMCA pool in order to pass swimming requirements to get merit badges for Eagle Scout. Several of the scouts also helped in the grand opening of the new Neal Klein homes in View Point. They served hot dogs and hamburgers to visitors. On the 23rd they will be in the Mingus Mountains snow boarding and sledding. “Oh to be young again.” |
| January started out with a couple of big
changes. Scout Master, Doug Clark was offered a promotion and at the
spur of he moment has moved to Southern California. Taking
Doug’s place as the new Scout Master is Mike Woods. Mike has
an extensive background in working with the boys in Troop #330. We wish
them both well in their new challenges. On January 10th, the Elks
board of trustees met, discussed and approved the scouts
using our Lodge every Thursday evening from 6:30 ‘til 8:00 p.m. for
their meetings. Also the monthly scout committee meetings will beheld
every third Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the conference room off the main
lounge. Several of the scouts made a trip to Bagdad and took a guided
tour through the copper mine. It was reported to havebeen a
very interesting trip and if you have a chance to go, take
it. |
